Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Quality & Safety

SreyRam Kuy, MD is a surgeon, health policy leader and healthcare executive. Dr. Kuy was the first woman appointed Deputy Under Secretary for Community Care for the VA, overseeing a $14.5 billion budget and 7,300 staff ensuring access to care for the 9 million veterans VA cares for nationwide.

Prior to this, Dr. Kuy served as Chief Medical Officer for Louisiana Medicaid, working to improve healthcare for 1.6 million children, pregnant women, disabled and low income patients. She led initiatives tackling the opioid crisis resulting in a 40% reduction in opioid prescriptions among Medicaid patients, and enabled women with breast cancer to gain access for the first time to needed contralateral breast reconstructive surgery through Medicaid.

Dr. Kuy is the recipient of the American College of Surgeons “Mary Edwards Walker Inspiring Women in Surgery Award”, President Bush’s “Daily Point of Light Award”, L’Oréal Paris “Women of Worth”, Aspen Institute Health Innovator, Presidential Leadership Scholar and Modern Healthcare’s top “Minority Healthcare Executives to Watch”.

Dr. Kuy has published extensively on healthcare policy, quality improvement, patient safety and has written for the Washington Post, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, Salon and Huffington Post about her experiences as a child survivor of genocide.
